Cancer Spheroids & 3D Tumor Models
Oncology is the largest application area for the 3D Petri Dish®. Tumor cells seeded into the non-adhesive agarose micro-mold self-assemble into uniform spheroids — 3D tumor models with the cell–cell contacts and gradients that make them more representative than flat culture, formed without scaffold or animal-derived matrix.

Why use tumor spheroids instead of 2D cancer cell culture?
Spheroids restore the 3D architecture, cell-cell contacts, and gradients that flat culture lacks, which is why they are widely used as more physiologically relevant tumor models in drug-response and invasion studies. The publications below show how labs apply them.
How uniform are the spheroids?
Each recess in the cast agarose gel forms one spheroid, and size is set by the number of cells seeded — so a single mold yields an array of spheroids of matched size, suitable for consistent dosing and imaging.
Can I co-culture tumor cells with other cell types?
Yes. Mixed microtissues have been formed from two and even three cell types mixed at a chosen ratio before seeding — the studies below include tumor-stroma and tumor-immune co-culture models.
