Research Overview

Conditioned medium — the secretome cells leave behind in culture — is safe and inexpensive, and its therapeutic effects have drawn wide interest, but almost none of that work has addressed erectile dysfunction. This study investigated conditioned medium from human bone-marrow mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment.

A high-concentration preparation was produced by culturing the cells as 3D spheroids and then concentrating the medium by cut-off filtration. Its composition was analyzed biochemically and the effect of the preparation process on quality was assessed, then therapeutic effect was tested in a rat model of cavernous nerve injury, where the benefits appeared in a dose-dependent manner.

Key Discoveries

  • MSC conditioned medium concentrated via 3D spheroid culture plus cut-off filtration
  • Composition analyzed biochemically, with the preparation process itself evaluated for effect on quality
  • Dose-dependent therapeutic effect in a cavernous nerve injury rat model of erectile dysfunction
