Research Overview

Organoids are among the past decade’s major biomedical advances: 3D micro-organs grown in vitro whose structure closely resembles native tissue. Built from the regenerative capacity of stem cells, intestinal organoids reproduce the morphology, function, and individualized stimulus responses of the real intestine.

This review discusses stem-cell-based 3D intestinal models across their uses — dissecting molecular pathophysiology, high-throughput drug screening, efficacy and toxicology testing, and organ-based regeneration for inflammatory bowel disease — and summarizes the advances, limitations, and open challenges of current reconstruction platforms.
