Research Overview
Liver fibrosis produces fibrous scarring, and diagnosis still depends on biopsies that carry clinical risk. MicroRNAs — detectable in tissues, body fluids, and culture media — are attractive alternatives because their expression and release change with tissue damage in both patients and cell culture, making them potential translational in vitro-to-in vivo biomarkers.
This work set out to identify and characterize miRNA biomarkers of liver fibrosis usable both in vitro for research and clinically for diagnosis, nominating miR-199a-5p, miR-214-3p, and additional candidates as markers of fibrotic change.
