Research Overview

In vitro systems let researchers dissect cellular mechanisms in a controlled setting while sidestepping the ethical and logistical burdens of animal work, and 3D culture — spheroids in particular — has become the most straightforward way to approximate in vivo conditions. In fish biology, however, 3D culture has been used sparingly, mostly for physiological and morphological characterization.

This review surveys the emerging applications of fish cell spheroids, arguing that their ability to emulate in vivo conditions makes them a promising in vitro model for aquaculture, toxicology, and comparative biology research.
