Research Overview

This work demonstrated that 3D cortical spheroid cultures do not merely contain neurons — they build functioning networks. Networks developed by day 9 and produced increasingly complex activity patterns as the cultures matured.

Crucially, the authors showed for the first time that spheroids exhibit network activity resembling in vivo network events, establishing scaffold-free cortical spheroids as a platform for studying oscillatory brain network dynamics in vitro.
