Microtissues®

Summary

Published in Advanced Materials (2024), this study demonstrates that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) spheroids formed in 3D Petri Dish® micro-molds can be chemically fixed while retaining their immunomodulatory secretome activity. These shelf-stable, shape-versatile spheroids represent a new class of off-the-shelf therapeutics that reduce inflammation without requiring live cell administration.

Fixed MSC Spheroids as Off-the-Shelf Immunomodulatory Therapeutics

Advanced Materials 2024 Research Team

Research Overview

MSC therapy is promising but limited by cell variability and short shelf life. This innovative study shows that chemically fixed MSC spheroids retain their immunomodulatory properties while becoming shelf-stable “off-the-shelf” therapeutics.

3D Petri Dish® enabled production of thousands of standardized spheroids for this work.

How 3D Petri Dish® Enabled This Research

Implications

Fixed MSC spheroids could democratize cell therapy by eliminating cold-chain requirements and batch-to-batch variability.

Key Discoveries

  • Fixed MSC spheroids retain immunomodulatory secretome
  • Shelf-stable at room temperature for extended periods
  • Shape-versatile: can be molded into different geometries
